Comparison of Envy, PanOptix, and Odyssey Multifocal Lenses
Overview
The Envy, PanOptix, and Odyssey are leading premium multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) designed to provide clear vision at multiple distances after cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. Each lens has unique strengths and some trade-offs, making their comparison important for patients and surgeons seeking the best visual outcomes.
Visual Quality and Range
-
Distance Vision
-
Odyssey and PanOptix both provide excellent distance vision, with some reports suggesting Odyssey may offer slightly sharper distance vision for some patients.
-
Envy is also highly rated for distance vision, with some surgeons noting it delivers the best overall image quality among the three.
-
-
Intermediate (Mid-Range) Vision
-
All three lenses perform well for intermediate tasks (e.g., computer use, dashboard viewing). About 95% of Odyssey patients report great mid-range vision, with a small minority (about 5%) noting it is not quite as strong as their near or far vision.
-
Both Envy and PanOptix are described as providing very good mid-range vision, with Envy sometimes edging out the others in clarity.
-
-
Near Vision
-
All three lenses deliver strong near vision, allowing most patients to read and perform close-up tasks without glasses28.
-
Contrast, Color, and Visual Disturbances
-
Contrast and Color Perception
-
Envy is often praised for the richest color and deepest blacks, providing high contrast and vivid image quality.
-
Odyssey also improves contrast acuity and reduces chromatic aberration, helping with tasks in varying lighting conditions.
-
PanOptix Pro is engineered for industry-leading light utilization (94%), resulting in brighter, sharper vision and improved contrast, especially at intermediate distances. But really, is there a shortage of light or do you live in a cave?!
-
-
Halos and Night Vision
-
All three lenses can produce nighttime halos due to their multifocal ring designs. The majority of patients are not bothered, but about 2–3% may find halos problematic. If you are obsessed about halos, these may not be the lenses for you…. Have you considered the ClearView? We have that one too!
-
Envy tends to have the most tolerable halos, with patients reporting less disturbance compared to PanOptix and Odyssey.
-
Odyssey incorporates a blue/violet-light filter to reduce glare and halos at night.
-
PanOptix Pro minimizes halos and glare through enhanced light management, but some patients with the original PanOptix reported dissatisfaction with halos and night vision, leading to lens exchanges in rare cases.
-
Patient Satisfaction and Dissatisfaction Rates
-
Odyssey has an outstanding satisfaction rate, with only about 1% of patients dissatisfied in early reports.
-
Envy has received high satisfaction scores, particularly for image quality and halo tolerance, but experienced a recall in March 2025 due to rare inflammatory complications (TASS). Again…If you are concerned, steer away from this option.
-
PanOptix has been widely used with great results, but a small percentage (about 2%) required lens exchange due to dissatisfaction with distance vision or halos. If you even think you may not be able to tolerate visual aberrations (halos, glare, waxy vision, multiple images) just steer clear. We have happy patients with virtually every lens we use and are singularly focused on happy patients and excellent outcomes.

Halo Tolerance | Best among three | Improved vs original PanOptix | Good, further reduced by Optiblue filter |
Night Vision | Excellent, minimal halos | Improved vs original PanOptix | Reduced glare/halos |
Satisfaction Rate | Very high, but recent recall | High, new model | Outstanding (99%) |
Recall/Issues | Recall (March 2025, TASS) | None reported | None reported |
Summary
-
Envy: Delivers arguably the best overall image quality, contrast, and color. Halos are present but generally more tolerable. Recent recall due to rare inflammatory reactions may limit its availability.
-
PanOptix Pro: Sets a new standard for light utilization and contrast, especially at intermediate distances. Halos and glare are minimized, but some patients with earlier PanOptix models reported issues. The Pro model is new, so long-term data is still emerging. You can pay more… but do you actually get more?
-
Odyssey: Provides excellent distance and near vision, with high patient satisfaction and minimal complaints. Contrast and color are very good, and night vision is enhanced by a blue/violet-light filter. Early data suggest fewer dissatisfied patients compared to PanOptix. We have had exceptional patient satisfaction with this option… We hope you will be the next to trust us with your eyes!
Bottom Line:
All three lenses offer excellent multifocal performance. Envy stands out for image quality and halo tolerance (when available), PanOptix Pro for light efficiency and contrast, and Odyssey for overall satisfaction and minimal visual complaints. The best choice depends on individual patient needs, surgeon experience, and lens availability at the time of sur
